In search of clarity, Brown Charité embarked on a 561-mile pilgrimage from France to Spain on the Camino de Santiago — step by step, through rain, negative two-degree weather, hailstorms, and heavy winds, up and down mountains, through the valleys. The journey became a process of reflection, healing, and rediscovery.
Somewhere between the silence, the steps, and the soul work, his voice returned. As he found himself coaching his fellow pilgrims as they journeyed to Santiago. From a Boy Who Couldn't Speak to a Man Who Couldn't Stay Silent
Brown Charité Sr.'s passion for speaking began at nine years old. As a child, he struggled with a speech impediment that made public speaking intimidating. After two years of speech therapy, his therapist encouraged him to enter a speech competition.
At nine, he performed "Because My Mama Told Me So" at the 6th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Speech and Art Contest. He won second place out of 37 students — earning $1,000 and a BMX bicycle. It was the first time he realized his voice could be a gift rather than a limitation.
